The Skymaster System-XV2 (173 MHz) from £375 Two Transmitter setup - £450
Tired
of carrying a TV aerial on your back?
This system has been under development for six years, and has been designed by an ex-Rolls-Royce aerospace engineer. It is not a wildlife tracking system but has been designed by a falconer for falconers, and has many advanced features never before seen on Falconry telemetry systems. Crucially, we have eliminated the need for tuning controls, the inaccurate & delicate meter, the requirement for headphones, the inconvenienty size and weight of previous VHF systems. The Skymaster XV2-173 is a single channel system which operates on the UK general channel 173.225 MHz VHF . Tracking of two hawks can be acheived by the use of two different transmitter tone patterns. These systems combine the best features of our Skytrack, Hawkfinder & Falconfinder systems, whilst the ingenious new design (originally based on the ergonomics of a machine pistol) results in an ultra compact & durable set, yet a considerable simplification of assembly, resulting in a better product at a lower price than our previous Falconfinder system. Massive sales during the early part of the season have allowed us to invest in a new micro-machining facility, to bring you an even better transmitter. In designing this system robustness, simplicity, range and accuracy were key conisiderations, and we considered a system which had to be carried on the back or left in the car was simply unacceptable. We have incorporated all the technology which makes our UHF systems so compact & reliable, transferring it to the more powerful & sensitive VHF frequencies. As a result the system offers four times the range of our LRV1 systems under adverse tracking conditions, particularly for transmitters in very low positions. VHF is therefore ideal for longwings, and also for hawks in many situations, where a guaranteed range is outweighs the greater accuracy obtained at UHF. Although no VHF system can be as compact as UHF, this is the smallest system available with a full gain directional antenna, & is smaller even than 216 MHz systems. The system can be used with any transmitter accurate and stable enough to remain within the detection band. Both the T-extenion & housing are constructed from heavy duty extruded aluminium, and they and the electronics inside are design to withstand shock. & take hard knocks. The handle is glass-filled nylon & the telescopic elements are spring Beryllium-Bronze.This is a field instrument which generally will not be harmed if dropped or it gets wet. So confident are we of the durability of our systems, that they are shipped with only their case & a single layer of bubble-wrap.
The Skymaster can be quickly deployed for tracking, and for the first time ever in an integrated system, is balanced for use in the vertical position, either for right or left handed operation. This makes it ideal for hawking in the woods. The graduated control dial can even be repositioned if this is the preferred method of operation.
The Skymaster quickly packs completely flat & then fits safely into the luxury padded holster, which can be worn on the belt, or studded into the pocket of our hawking vest pack.
Tuning-free Channels Our systems are on fixed frequencies with no tuning required. You don't have to keep tuning your TV set, or your mobile phone, so why should you have to keep tuning your telemetry receiver? The receiver features a simple power switch & indicator. Hawkfinder H-Beam Technology The Skymaster XV2 system is built around our unique H-Beam which offers performance to match a 5-element yagi, yet has a length of only half that of a typical 3 element yagi. The detachable telescopic elements close to 7" or less. Most yagis give rise to side lobes (areas of unwanted high gain at the sides) together with a pronounced back lobe. The H-Beam gives an almost perfect cardoid (heart shaped) detection pattern with more forward gain, which steadily reduces towards the back, culiminating in a deep and very noticeable "Null" at the back. This makes the Skymaster a true geometric tracker, rather than just an audio tracker Hawkfinder 3-step Variable Audio Metering System The Skymaster XV2 receiver features a precision 3-step variable audio metering system. This consist of a three step signal strength analyzer & preset audio system. With traditional types of tracker, you have to listen to the increase in volume. But small changes in volume are difficult to detect, particularly if the volume is set at a high level to start with. This means that in windy conditions, you have to work with the volume at a low level, & so you have to resort to headphones. The Skymaster XV2 has the volume precisely set in 3 easily distinguishable steps. As the gain is increased, signal strength at which the sounder operates decreases. This gives rise to a much wider control range - the only control needed on the set. This system also uses far less battery power (approx. 40 hrs of continuous operation), and coincidentally, provides an auto squelch function. In practice, the Range control is best thought of as a single control.
Turbo-II Transmitter The screw-top Turbo-II 2 stage transmitter produces close to the legal power limit of 10mW & incorporates the base load for the screw-on 1/8 wave (8") antenna. It features an integral blue HiViz LED (ideal for checking status or locating birds at night). Using the popular lightweight, CR1/3N battery, it has a life of 7 days continuous. Available in two tone patterns.
